Selected Works

Jun T. Lai's practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and public art, while continually exploring life, freedom, space, and transformation through relationships.

Rather than organizing the works by medium, this selection unfolds through four interconnected themes—Being and Transformation, Heart and Life, Wonderland, and Island, Ocean, and Light—tracing the artist's journey from inner experience and bodily perception toward public space, the natural environment, and the artwork as a generative field.

Being and Transformation has been a central inquiry in Jun T. Lai's practice since the 1980s. Being is understood not as a fixed state, but as something continuously unfolding through time, material, color, and space. As the work moves from the pictorial plane into three-dimensional and spatial experience, viewing becomes a process of encountering change and reconsidering what it means to be.

Heart and Life begins with the body, the spirit, and inner perception, asking how life moves between interior and exterior, presence and absence, self and relationship. Works such as Heart Chamber, Heart Vessel, and Heart Field, Heart Earth approach the heart as a vessel of memory, energy, and spirit, opening intimate experience toward others and the surrounding space.

Since 2000, Wonderland has brought together flowers, color, light, and playful forms to imagine freedom, hope, and vitality. Extending from exhibition spaces into cities, transit sites, campuses, and bodies of water, these works enter everyday life and become open, changing public landscapes through the movement and participation of viewers.

After Jun T. Lai began living and working in Dulan in 2007, the island, ocean, Kuroshio Current, dawn light, wind, and Austronesian cultures became vital forces within her practice. The work is no longer conceived as an autonomous object, but as a field continually unfolding among light, environment, time, the body, and the viewer—revealing the island as a place of movement, encounter, and becoming.
